Your roadmap

Emigrating to Cyprus – how to make the move

As an EU citizen you can settle freely in Cyprus. We show you the realistic process – from preparation through residence and insurance to settling in.

Basics

Emigrating as an EU citizen – generally straightforward

Because Cyprus is an EU member, German, Austrian and other EU citizens enjoy freedom of establishment. You need no visa and no residence permit in the classic sense – but you do need to register your stay (the so-called Yellow Slip) if you stay longer than three months.

For the move to run smoothly and – if desired – to also work for tax, structured planning pays off. The key building blocks: tax residence, health insurance, optionally your own company, plus the practical topics of housing and authorities.

In 6 steps

The typical process

1

Clarification & strategy

An honest review: is Cyprus worth it for you? Which goals (taxes, quality of life, company) come first?

2

Trial stay

Get to know the island, narrow down a location, make first contacts – ideally in spring or autumn.

3

Housing & registration

Rental contract and tax number (TIC) as the basis for all further steps.

4

Registration / Yellow Slip

Registering your stay as an EU citizen (registration certificate, “Yellow Slip”).

5

Insurance & taxes

Health insurance (GESY/private) and tax registration, optionally the non-dom status.

6

Company & daily life

Optional company formation, accounting, deregistration in Germany – and settling in.

Success factors

What matters

🧭

Sequence

Residence, insurance and taxes interlock – the right order saves time and money.

📑

Substance

Anyone who wants tax benefits must genuinely relocate their centre of life to Cyprus.

🇩🇪

Deregistration in DE

Steps are also needed in Germany (deregistration, tax office, possibly exit taxation).

Pitfalls

Common mistakes – and how to avoid them

Most problems arise not on the Cypriot side but from an unclean separation from Germany. Anyone who does not properly give up their German residence, keeps a centre of life (e.g. a flat available at any time) or takes company shares abroad without considering exit taxation risks double taxation and disputes with the tax office.

Equally common: overly optimistic timelines and underestimating the substance requirements for the company. Our recommendation is therefore always to plan the steps in the right order and with a little buffer – and to clarify tax topics with experts in advance.

Häufige Fragen

Frequently asked questions about emigrating

Do I need a visa for Cyprus as a German?

No. As an EU citizen you enjoy freedom of establishment. For stays over three months, however, you must register (Yellow Slip).

How long does emigrating take overall?

It depends on your situation. The official steps are doable in a few weeks; a complete, tax-clean relocation including a company is better planned with a few months' lead time.

Can I emigrate on a trial basis first?

Highly recommended. Many rent first and decide on the permanent location and final structure after a few months.
