Hospitable, relaxed and Mediterranean: understanding the people and culture of Cyprus helps emigrants settle in faster.
Around 920,000 people live in the Republic of Cyprus (south), a considerable part of them in and around the cities of Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos. The majority is Greek-Cypriot; in addition there is a large international community of EU citizens, Britons, Eastern Europeans and increasingly professionals from all over the world.
The official languages are Greek and Turkish, but English is omnipresent in daily life – a legacy of the British era. This makes settling in unusually easy for emigrants.
Cypriots are considered extraordinarily hospitable and family-oriented. The pace of life is more relaxed than in Germany, and relationships and personal contacts count for a lot. Religion (predominantly Greek-Orthodox) shapes festivals and customs. Anyone who approaches people openly and brings a little patience to bureaucratic processes will quickly come to appreciate the Cypriot way of life.
